You should consider a specialist referral for symptoms that are persistent, severe, or concerning, such as: difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, rectal bleeding, persistent heartburn despite medication, chronic diarrhoea or constipation, severe abdominal pain, or abnormal test results (like anaemia) that your GP suspects may have a gut cause.
