Are there risks or side effects?

Colonoscopy is very safe. Temporary bloating or cramping is common. Serious complications, such as bleeding (especially after large polyp removal) or perforation (a tear in the colon wall), are rare (less than 1 in 1,000 procedures). The benefits of cancer prevention and diagnosis far outweigh these small risks.
